F1: Japan – Mercedes 1-2, Vettel third; Bianchi airlifted out

As Typhoon Phanfone approached Japan, the course at Suzuka was completely wet. All practices and qualifying were held in dry conditions. Lewis Hamilton led his Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg by 3 points coming into the race. Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) was in third place, 60 points back. The field started behind the safety car. Only two laps needed to be completed for half points to be awarded, 40 laps (of 53) for full points. Rosberg started on pole, with Hamilton next door. Valtteri Bottas an...

When Allen McNish retired at the end of last season Audi Sport Team Joest needed to find a replacement who would keep the mark at the top of World Endurance Championship – and Le Mans – performance. They chose 29-year old Brazilian Lucas Di Grassi, who 18 Formula 1 starts under  his belt and had finished third at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2013 with Marc Gene and Oliver Jarvis in the team’s #3 entry.   On the transition from fill-in to full-time “It’s b...

F1: Monza – Hamilton beats Rosberg, Williams leapfrogs Ferrari

Photo: Mercedes AMG Petronas   Lewis Hamilton took pole from his Mercedes teammate, championship leader Nico Rosberg, by nearly 0.3-sec. Mercedes engines took the top six spots on the grid: Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa (Williams, P3-4), Kevin Magnussen and Jenson Button (McLaren, P5-6). It was Hamilton’s first pole since the Spanish Grand Prix in May and the first Formula 1 Grand Prix since contact between he and Rosberg put Hamilton out of the race at Spa. Radio transmission to...

F1: Spa – Ricciardo wins second straight; Rosberg, Bottas trail

Photo: Red Bull Racing   Rain at the start of qualifying gradually dissipated as the sessions occurred, but the overall outcome didn’t change much, an all-Mercedes front row of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton outpacing the rest of the field by roughly 2 sec. Rosberg entered the post-summer break race with an 11-point lead over his teammate, who was in turn 60 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull). Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) ran another 16 points back. The next two rows of the ...

Photo: Red Bull Racing Fire and water. Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes burst into flames during the first round of qualifying Saturday and rain greeted he and rest of field, including pole-sitting teammate, Nico Rosberg on Sunday. Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull) started next to Rosberg on Row 1. Valtteri Bottas (Williams) and Vettel’s teammate Daniel Ricciardo made up Row 2. Hamilton started from pit row for the first time in his F1 career. He came back the prior weekend from starting P20 t...

F1: Germany – Rosberg goes wire-to-wire in first home win, Bottas P2 again

Photo: Mercedes AMG Petronas   Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) started from pole in The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Germany and led from beginning to end to take his first career victory at home. Valtteri Bottas (Williams-Mercedes) started and finished second. Rosberg’s teammate Lewis Hamilton, however, might have had the most impressive drive of the day, starting P20 after a Q1 suspension failure and subsequent transmission replacement before advancing 17 spots to take the third spot on the po...

F1: Williams’ Massa, Bottas enjoy some UK table football

Photo: Williams Martini Racing   Williams Martini Racing F1 had a decidedly mixed race weekend at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix. Valtteri Bottas qualified P14 and Felipe Massa P15. But while the Finn went on to take the second step on the podium behind Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), Massa suffered a Lap 1 collision with Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) which removed both drivers from the race. It was Bottas’ second straight (and second career) Top 3, having finished third in F1’s...

F1: Austria – Mercedes 1-2; Rosberg tops Hamilton, Bottas third

“Holy shit!” the words that leapt out of my mouth, sitting in a pleasantly dark, cool room by myself when Felipe Massa took pole position -- his first since Brazil 2008 – over his Williams teammate Valtteri Bottas, creating the first all-Williams Row 1 since 2003. P2 was Bottas’ highest qualifying position in his 2 years of competition. My simple expletive exclamation followed other expressions of more general pleasure I managed to keep in my head regarding Formula 1&rsqu...

IndyCar: Juan Pablo Montoya talks about his return to open-wheel racing

Photo: Chris Owens   Juan Pablo Montoya breezed into the media center after 248 laps on a sweltering evening a couple of weekends ago seemingly without a concern. His broad smile and rapport during the lively Q&A summed up both his third-place performance June 7 in the Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway and his current station in motorsports. "I'm happy," said Montoya, who at 38 years old returned this year to Indy car racing after a 13-year absence. "I had a hell of a race." &nbs...
