Jibbies & Loond - Video Special: Pallbearer, Power Trip, Venomous Maximus, Eagle Claw

Fitzgerald’s, right up there with Rudyard’s on the very short list of Houston’s longest-lived cool places to see music, has added a nice new twist to things lately: All-ages shows that are free for 21+ an just $10 for those under. What’s more, the bills often take place on a weekend and include one or more national acts people would actually want to see – Saint Vitus, Electric Six, etc. – and then a diverse line-up of local/regional groups in support; sometime...

The Jibbies & Loond Show - Episode 049 - A New Beginning

Hello friends. Welcome to Episode 049 of The Jibbies & Loond Show. You’ll notice it sounds a little different. Our two intrepid hosts have decided to actually feature full songs for you to hear. It’s a work in progress, but so far we’re thrilled with the results. The first two tracks to tickle your ears come for Hatebreed and Sons of Aeon, both of which have new records outs right now. If we could get J&L to talk a little less, the possibility of doing three or four songs a week exists. But then you couldn’t get up to date on the various permutations of the Anthrax saga, Saxon box sets, and the glory of Power Trip live, all of which are explored within.

As I’m typing, Jibbies sits nervously in the corner, worried that he undersold the quality of the new Hatebreed album…that’s right folks, it’s a grower, and very good indeed. Have a listen and judge for yourself. We hope you like the new format.

Finnish heavy metal band Children of Bodom have entered Danger Johnny Studios in Helsinki to begin work on their as-yet-untitled eighth studio album. COB has teamed up with recording engineer Mikko Karmila, who worked with the band on Hatebreeder, Follow the Reaper, and Hate Crew Deathroll among others, as well as producer Peter Tägtgren (Marduk, Amon Amarth), who is overseeing production of vocals and keyboards. Mixing will occur at Finnvox Studios a...

Review: Bloody Hammers – ‘Bloody Hammers'

Bloody Hammers are part of the current resurgence of accessible dark/occult heavy rock, perhaps the biggest surge since Danzig and Type O Negative were at their respective heights. But while Ghost follow an overtly theatrical path and Venomous Maximus add metal and classic guitar rock to the mix, Charlotte, NC’s, Bloody Hammers conjure their sonic hauntings through a filter that is at once slick and DIY. ‘Witch of Endor’ starts things off with Jarrett Bury’s perpetually ...

Jibbies & Loond - Video Special: Red Fang, Black Tusk, and Lord Dying

Early November brought the double shot of Red Fang and Black Tusk to Fitzgerald’s in Houston. Lord Dying was also on the bill and started things off in fine fashion, adding touches of stoner and thrash to their own take on modern metal. Seeing a show featuring 2 of the most happening heavy bands on the planet in a space as cozy as the smaller, downstairs room at Fitzgerald’s was going to be a treat no matter what. But the first exposure to Lord Dying only added to the bargain and the...

The Jibbies & Loond Show - Episode 045 - Tomahawk Sandy

Alright folks. We’ve done gone and brung it this time! Tune in for a review of the recent Tomahawk stop in Houston, as well as previews of upcoming shows by Converge/Torche/Kvelertak , Red Fang/Black Tusk/Lord Dying, and Dethklok/Machine Head/As I Lay Daying/The Black Dahlia Murder. We also offer our expert opinion on new records from Killing Joke (Loond’s early pick for big 2012 honors), Devin Townsend, Mos Generator, and Bloody Hammers. And then….things go slightly off the rails as J&L first work themselves into a froth months in advance for Clutch’s ‘Earth Rocker’ and then vent their spleens on those denizens of the northeast who have become unduly whiny in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

There’s lots of great music to accompany the free-wheeling commentary, so the time has come to do your duty: Lay back, close your eyes, open up, and take it in.

Mos Generator – ‘For Your Blood’

Bloody Hammers – ‘Say Goodbye To The Sun’

Clutch – ‘Spacegrass’

[Editor’s Note: J&L’s Hurricane Sandy rant is not directed at ALL residents of the northeast, many of whom suffered truly tragic losses of life and property….just the ones who seem pretty much okay but are now standing around whining. GonzoGeek’s thoughts go out to all those still recovering from losses suffered at the hands of this storm. We know from Gulf Coast experience how hard it is].

Review: 'Metalocalypse Season Four' DVD

Dethklok, the world’s greatest cultural force, return to earth in ‘Metalocalypse Season 4,’ as foretold by prophecy, to record the most important album of their career. The ups and downs of this process make for some serious metal-driven funniness. But one of the coolest things about this series is that you don’t need to be a metal fan to enjoy it. Examples of the universal human themes lampooned in Season 4 include: fan love, smoking , ‘-Con life, global economic h...
