Four different drivers had won races coming into the Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Helio Castroneves made his 300th career start, only the sixth driver in Indy car history to do so. Castroneves (#3) came into the race with three 2015 Top 5 finishes, tying him with Team Penske teammate and season points-leader Juan Pablo Montoya (#2).
