Off and on rain was part of testing and remained a possibility at race time. Johnny O’Connell (Cadillac Racing CTS-V) took his third straight pole of the season, with Randy Pobst (K-PAX Racing Volvo S60 T6) starting P2. Mark Wilkins (Kinetic Kia Racing Optima) was out front in GTS.
O’Connell was still in front after the first caution, brought out by Wilkins’ Kia teammate Nic Jonsson, with Pobst in P2 and James Sofronas (Global Motorsports Group Audi S8) running third. O’Connell’s teammate Andy Pilgrim took P3 a few turns after the restart. Wilkins maintained the GTS lead, but under increased pressure from Jack Baldwin in his GTSport Racing with Goldcrest Motorsports Porsche Cayman S. Pilgrim began to pressure Pobst with 33 min to go, as O’Connell built a 1.2-sec lead.
Pobst’s teammate Alex Figge, running P5 at the time behind Sofronas, hit the wall on Turn 13 bringing out a second caution with more than 20 min left to race. Peter Cunningham (RealTime Racing Acura TSX) also hit the wall on a separate part of the course.
Lawson Aschenbach (Blackdog Racing Camaro) took GTS P3 on the restart with GT unchanged as O’Connell, Pobst, Pilgrim, and Sofronas and 10 min left to race.
These running orders held to the end. Sofronas’ P4 was his first non-first or second finish of the season. Tim Pappas (Mercedes) came in fifth. GTS Top 3 was Wilkins, Baldwin, and Aschenbach.
