The Australian V8 Supercars took to the track this morning with one puzzle to solve: how to break the Jamie Whincup, Craig Lowndes (both Red Bull Racing Australia, Holden), Fabian Coulthard (Lockwood Racing, Holden) stranglehold on the podium. Yesterday’s pole winners were Coulthard (Race 13) and Whincup (Race 14), so starting in front of either of them couldn’t hurt.
But it was not to be. Whincup took pole with a time of 1:32.1034, with Lowndes qualifying second 0.4468 sec back and Coulthard third at 1:32.6039.
Pepsi Max Crew FPR’s overnight changes seemed to help, however, with Mark Winterbottom qualifying P4 at a time of 1:32.7042. Rick Kelly (Jack Daniel’s Racing) was the top qualifying Nissan in fifth with a time of 1:32.8497.
Tim Slade (Heavy Haulage Australia Racing) qualified his Mercedes in a make-quickest P19 (1:33.5392).
