Louisiana’s sons of Blackened Death Groove – Goatwhore, tore through a blistering 1 hour set at Fitzgerald’s last night. My girlfriend and I got to meet and chat with Mr. Sammy Duet (guitar/vocals) at the bar before he hit the stage. Sammy was super nice, humble, and soft spoken. I’ve met and talked to Ben Falgoust (lead vocals) before and he was also hella-cool. Really great guys. It was quite a strange bill of bands last night. Most of the other bands were a cheesy blend of screamo and what kids today loosely refer to as punk. Don’t know why Goatwhore was on this bill. The guys still gave 100% despite the meager crowd and delivered a highly energized set of molten Metal.
The shear athleticism of Zack Simmons drumming was a sight to hear and see. The dude pounds forth blast-beats effortlessly and with precision that is just dizzying. James Harvey’s lumbering bass work provided a foundation of bottom end so mighty that the thought of a second guitar player in this band would be sacrilegious. Ben is a monster on stage as he prowls and gesticulates while spewing forth tales of apocalypse. His Tom Warrior-esque death grunts were awesome…OOH!!!! I’ve seen this band many times and I gotta say that Sammy gets better and better as an axe-man every time. His solos last night were soaring and spectacular.
While the careening speed of this band is highly impressive, it is the incredible mid-tempo gargantuan groove that shines bright as Satan’s Star and makes this band so fuckin fun. No frills, pure Metal that harkens back to “Morbid Tales” era Celtic Frost. Do yourself a favor and see this amazing band when they steam-roll through your town and get the new album – “Blood For The Master“.
“Who needs a god when you’ve got Satan!”
