What I'm Into: Battlestar Galactica (redux)
It started with a tiny spaceship.

Several years ago, I bought one of Hasbro’s Titanium Colonial Vipers.  Not from the reimagined ‘Battlestar Galactica’ but from the original, because I’m snobby like that.  The Viper has always been one of my favorite spaceship designs, easily top 5 (there’ll be a post about that list later).

A few weeks ago, while cleaning the basement, I rediscovered it along with my original Baron Karza Micronaut figure (probably post about that, too, one day).   I might not have any Micronaut comics lying about anymore, but I do have Netflix so I decided I would sit down and watch those old ‘Battlestar Galactica’s with Lorne Greene, Dirk Benedict and Richard Hatch.

I made it through 15 minutes.

Dear Manny!  This was an embarrassment.  Word to the wise: if you ever loved a show that was on in the 80’s, cherish it as a memory.  NEVER watch it on Netflix or DVD or TV Land.  You’ll puncture your brain when you try to gouge your eyes out..

That being said, I decided to try the reimagined ‘Battlestar Galactica’ that SciFi or SyFY or whatever the Nerd Channel is calling themselves these day aired back (ha!) in 2004.  I figured it couldn’t be worse than what I had just seen, and if it was, then I’d at least entertain myself with origami and shouting ‘Let’s do this’ over Edward James Olmos’ dialog.

Funny thing.  I really liked the show.

On a scale of 1-10, the new show is about 100 times better than the original.  The writing is better, the plotting is better, the acting is better, the effects are better.  Everything is better with the exception of Cylon Raiders, which were way cooler in the original show.  No longer do we suffer from the same three stock shots of Cylons getting blown when there’s a dogfight.  We get space battles, we get noise and movement and confusion.  We get excitement.

Love it!

I said the writing is better, right?  Man, is it ever.
There’s a certain practicality that I think the original show lacked.  How do you keep the government running?  How do you keep the fleet running?  I don’t think the old show ever dealt with those challenges.  I’m fairly certain it never tackled issues like civilian oversight of the military or the dehumanizing of one’s enemies or torture, either.  Somehow I can’t see Lorne Greene ordering the torture of a prisoner.  Hell, I couldn’t stop seeing ‘Bonanza’ whenever he was onscreen.

‘Hey Little Joe..er..I mean Starbuck, what say you and Hoss...er...that fat viper pilot go survey the ranch...er...fleet and look for rustle..er..raiders.”

Yes, and launch that annoying little boy and his dog-thing out of an airlock on your way out.

If I could make one change, I would tweak ‘religion’ somehow.  Not that I’m against them having one, but it’s easier to explain the show to someone who hasn’t seen it without them saying ‘Oh, so it’s like Greek mythology’ every five minutes.

Anyway, I’m about halfway through the second season now and I really like what I’ve seen so far.  The Pegasus has just arrived on the scene and that Admiral Cain is a stone cold bitch.

Turns out so is Madam President.

Can’t wait to see what happens next.
