My Favorite Albums Of 2018

My 2018 was plagued with much pain and misery.  A very difficult divorce started things off with the ending of a relationship of 7 years.  It still makes me shudder as to how it all went down and how my now ex-wife conducted herself.  There was the difficulty of dealing with my parents by myself during their twice a year visit from overseas.  There was frustration surrounding the current political/social climate.  Being single again and navigating the adversarial and shallow dating scene that is filled with the most awful human beings ever was also mind numbing.

But there were some really good things about the year that I will cherish.  My close friendships with key people who gave me so much love and support.  Meeting my current band-mates and getting back into playing music.  Going to a bunch of awesome shows.  Some really great trips to Cape Cod, NYC, Buffalo, and Toronto.  And of course the plethora of killer new music that brings me such joy and pleasure on a daily basis.  So take a gander at my list below and give some love to these awesome bands/artists for their dedication, craft, labor, and talent.

King Chiefs – Blue Sonnet (Roosevelt Row Records) – Hands down my favorite release of the year.  Power, beauty, soul, fuzz…it’s all here.  See my write-up on this awesome band here - http://www.gonzogeek.com/Blog/tabid/62/ID/2145/King-Chiefs.aspx

Komatsu – A New Horizon (Argonauta Records) – The Super Massive Mothersludgers from Eindhoven bring us a brilliant and timeless Stoner Rock record of the ages.  See my write-up on ‘A New Horizon’ here - http://www.gonzogeek.com/Blog/tabid/62/ID/2207/KOMATSU--A-New-Horizon.aspx

Sundrifter – Visitations (Small Stone Records) – I got this record by the Boston trio before Small Stone picked them up.  Happy for the guys to have gotten scooped up by a great label.  Nine rockin interstellar Stoner Rock tracks filled with great riffs, soaring vocals, and deep bass grooves.  https://sundrifter.bandcamp.com/

Oak – Oak III (Self Released) – You’d never think this Stoner Rock outfit is from London, UK as they sound more like they’re from Kentucky, USA.  Huge bellowing burly vocals atop a soundtrack of killer Stoner Rock.  Lumbering, heavy, and hypnotic.  https://oakstoner.bandcamp.com/album/oak-iii

Foot – Buffalo (Self Released) – Magnificent record by this 4 piece from Melbourne, Australia.  Majestic clean vocals atop a slightly proggy/shoe-gaze tinged foundation of kick-ass Stoner Rock.  https://footmelb.bandcamp.com/album/buffalo

Stone Deaf – Royal Burnout (Coffin & Bolt) – An amazing re-incarnation of early Kyuss/QOTSA from Colorado.  Super tight and talented.  The songs are punchy and very catchy.  Clean crisp production lends for a very pleasing auditory adventure.  https://stone-deaf.bandcamp.com/album/royal-burnout

Anna Burch – Quit The Curse (Polyvinyl Records) – Two words…Dream Girl.  Fantastic debut from this ultra-cute Detroit native.  Anna has a lovely voice and the sweet melodies on this record will twinkle in your mind after each listen.  There’s a bit of a 90’s vibe goin on here and it works really well within the framework of the arrangements, musicianship, and vocal delivery.  Mellow, poppy, dreamy.  https://annaburch.bandcamp.com/

Forming The Void – Rift (Self Released) – Another Stoner Rock gem from Louisiana.  This 4 piece just got picked up by Ripple Music.  Congrats guys!  Incredible groove, hefty riffs, and booming clean vocals.  Crank it up, close your eyes, and go on a cosmic journey.  https://formingthevoid.bandcamp.com/album/rift

Black Moth – Anatomical Venus (Spinefarm Records) – Grungy heavy rock from Leeds, UK.  Harriet Hyde has a sweet and killer voice.  Very cool, mid-tempo, hooky stuff that kinda reminds me of Scheer.  https://www.blackmothofficial.com/

Please – Audible Illusions (Self Released) – Stumbled across this extremely talented band from Arizona and this record has been in heavy rotation in my world.  Androgynous vocal delivery and super tight chops/musicianship by the rest of the band.  Full of subtle and amazing intricacies.  Memorable and catchy melodies and massive grooves along with killer sonic production.  https://thebandplease.bandcamp.com/album/audible-illusions

Iron Crown – Self Titled (Self Released) – This 5 track offering is a beautiful cascade of gargantuan riff after riff.  Head bobbin, foot tappin riff after glorious riff.  Doomy Stoner Rock with haunting clean vocals and huge riffs.  Did I mention there’s a ton of awesome riffs on this thing?  https://ironcrowndoom.bandcamp.com/album/iron-crown

Backwoods Payback – Future Slum (Self Released) – The juggernaut from Philly returns with another kick-ass set of tunes.  From straight forward full throttle rockin to slower moody numbers…this record is really diverse and covers lots of different textures.  https://backwoodspayback.bandcamp.com/album/future-slum

Mos Generator – Shadowlands (Listenable Records) – What more can I say about this incredible band that I haven’t on almost all my previous lists.  Musical journey-man Tony Reed does it again with a brilliant slab of Boogie Stoner Rock.  https://listenable-records.bandcamp.com/album/shadowlands

Realm – Red Clay Dead River (Self Released) – Not to be confused with the Progressive Thrash band from the late 80’s with the same name.  This is a bad-ass Southern Stoner Rock band from Knoxville, Tennessee.  Whiskey soaked vocals and fat dirty grooves.  https://realmknox.bandcamp.com/album/red-clay-dead-river

Sergeant Thunderhoof – Terra Solus (Hoof Records) – From Somerset, UK comes an epic record of slightly proggy/psychedelic heavy rock.  Love this band name.  Hazy, fuzzy, doomy.  Well crafted songs with thoughtful depth and structure.  https://sergeantthunderhoof.bandcamp.com/album/terra-solus

Judas Priest – Firepower (Columbia Records) – The British Heavy Metal legends return with their 18th studio album and it is stellar.  The record is produced by Metal producer extraordinaire Andy Sneap, who has also taken over the second guitar spot in the band for the departed Glenn Tipton.  Classic Priest Metal with tons of Thrashy mid-tempo bangers and double-bass gallop.  http://judaspriest.com/

Khruangbin – Con Todo El Mundo (Dead Oceans) – Houston representin!!!!  Incredibly talented trio that plays loungy down-tempo funky psychedelic world music grooves.  Extremely hypnotizing and guaranteed to put you in a great mood.  https://khruangbin.bandcamp.com/album/con-todo-el-mundo-excluding-n-s-america

Magic Wands – Abrakadabra (ETXE Records) – Fantastic duo from Los Angeles, CA.  Perfect blend of electronic, pop, dance, and rock.  Really catchy and memorable.  https://magic-wands.bandcamp.com/album/abrakadabra-etxe-records-2018

Corrosion Of Conformity – No Cross No Crown (Nuclear Blast) – The much anticipated return of Pepper Keenan (guitar/lead vocals) to the ranks of this legendary band.  It’s as if he never left.  A natural progression from “In The Arms Of God” with all the swagger, swing, groove, and Southern Stoner riffing that these guys are loved for.  www.coc.com

Disrule – Sleep In Your Honor (Seeing Red Records) – Fuzz laden Stoner Rock sprinkled with some Doom from Denmark.  The vocal styling is quite reminiscent of Pepper from C.O.C.  Catchy and memorable hooks and killer head-bobbin mid-tempo rhythms.  https://disrule.bandcamp.com/

Craneium – The Narrow Line (Ripple Music) – Epic Stoner Rock masterpiece from Turku, Finland.  Majestic songs with plenty of ebb and flow to take the listener on an amazing auditory adventure.  Burn one and float away while cranking this to 11.  https://craneiumband.bandcamp.com/

Foghound – Awaken To Destroy (Ripple Music) – So great to see this Maryland outfit bounce back after the tragic and senseless murder of their bassist Rev. Jim Forrester.  A fantastic blend of Stoner Rock, Doom, and Punk.  Huge meaty riffs a plenty that will clobber your earholes and leave you begging for more.  https://ripplemusic.bandcamp.com/album/awaken-to-destroy
