The history of movies based on video games is littered with noble attempts that failed monumentally. Street Fighter. Mario Brothers. Doom.
None of these movies set the box office on fire.
So, when I heard they were making a movie out of Rampage
, I was skeptical.
The side scrolling kaiju arcade classic didn't seem like something that would lend itself to an movie.
I was wrong.
Can You Smell It?
Enter Dwayne Johnson.
The biggest movie star in the world is a geek at heart, so his additional as the lead was huge.
The Rock is a great action star, so him facing off against a bunch of genetically altered animals to save mankind is perfect.
Johnson stars as primatologist Davis Okoye, a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the extraordinarily intelligent, incredibly rare albino silverback gorilla who has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry mutates this gentle ape into a raging creature of enormous size.
To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered animals. As these newly created super creatures tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with discredited geneticist Kate Caldwell to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.
Of Course, the wolf can fly
I really enjoyed Rampage
. Johnson's charisma sells the premise. The rest of the cast is top notch. The monsters really work.
I mean, who doesn't like mutant gorillas, wolves and alligators?
is what I like to call a "big dumb action movie." That's not a slight in any way. I love action movies with big heroes and big action that I don't have to think about.
That's exactly what Rampage
It's a fun way to spend a couple of hours.
is available now wherever you partake of your video delicacies.
