As a card carrying 80s kid, I remember a time when the theaters, drive-ins and video stores were flooding with teen sex comedies, both good and bad.
For every Porky's
there was a Joysticks
As sensibilities have evolved, the teen sex comedy has largely fallen out of favor. The last one to really make a cultural impact was American Pie
That movie and its sequels proved that there was still a market for these types of movies if people are brave enough to make them.
That brings us to Blockers
, out now from Universal Pictures, is a smart update on the standard teen sex farce. Instead of a bunch of hormone addled teen boys trying to lose their virginity, Blockers gives us a group of lifelong female teen friends who decide to lose their virginity on prom night.
Now hilarity and hijinks still ensue, but by smartly turning the genre tropes on their head, Blockers delivers a very funny ride. Throw in over-the-top parental trio John Cena, Leslie Mann and Ike Barinholtz doing anything to foil their daughters’ prom night sex pact and Blockers delivers on all levels.
I really enjoyed Blockers. The entire cast delivers. The story is fast paced and funny. The gags are gross and inappropriate. Body parts and fluids are plentiful. In short, everything you want from a teen sex farce.
Don't come into Blockers looking for art or social commentary. This isn't an edgy indie movie. Blockers is the heir apparent to all those classic grindhouse teen flicks of my youth. I mean that as a good thing. In a world that needs to remember how to laugh, Blockers delivers right from the libido.
Blockers is available now from Universal Pictures On Demand, DVD and Blu-Ray.
