Welcome to Monday kids. I hope the weekend was good to you and today wasn't too cruel.
I've been busy this week. Let's see what I got into...shall we?
READY PLAYER ONE
- Okay, I think I have to clip a corner off of my geek card. Somehow, in the midst of raising the Wonder Twins, I completely missed Ernest Cline's amazing novel. Sure, Spielberg turned it into a movie, but the book. Sweet Manny! The book! Ready Player One
is the best book I've read in years. The world of the story is fully realized and pulls the reader in much like the OASIS of the story. You find yourself sucked into Wade's story as he tries, Charlie Bucket-like, to win the prize at the end of the contest. If you haven't read this one, stop what you are doing and get a copy of it now. If you have read it and are reading this, please don't think less of me.
ANT-MAN AND THE WASP
- The latest MCU movie serves as a welcome humor sorbet after the grim affair that was Infinity War. The movie falls in the space between the two MCU wars - Civil and Infinity - and explains what Scott Lang has been up to. In short - not much. The movie is funny and fast paced. Paul Rudd continues to bring his snarky charm to reformed con Scott Lang. The Quantum Realm plays a big part in the film and, I imagine, the MCU going forward. I enjoyed the movie and would recommend it to anyone looking for a couple of hours of escapist entertainment.
NEW JAPAN PRO WRESTLING
- So, this appears to be my week of shortcomings. I've always been familiar with NJPW in a purely Apter sense. That is, I knew it existed and, in the past few years, it had gained in popularity in the US. I just hadn't taken the time to learn a new fed. I just didn't have the time. Then, last week, I saw that AXS was running the second Omega/Okada match. HOLY CRAP! This is good stuff. NJPW has smartly grown their brand by bringing in popular talented gaijin (like Omega) and mixing them with the homegrown talent. I'm watching the G1 Special as I write this and I think I might just have to make some more time for NJPW.
