Welcome to Monday kids.
I spent the weekend recharging. It was much needed. Hope yours was productive in whatever way makes you happy.
What did I get into? I'm so glad you asked.
- Edgar Wright's 2017 heist movie was, in a word, awesome. I didn't see it over the summer when it came out, but I did watch it over the weekend. Everything about this movie is excellent. From the titular Baby Driver's obsession with music, to the way everything is choreographed to that music. Every performance is spot on, including, yes, Kevin Spacey as the man who puts all the capers together. Special notice to Jon Hamm for a sinister turn as Buddy. If you haven't seen this movie you really owe it to yourself to give it a look.
INFAMOUS IRON MAN
- the premise is very simple. Iron Man is dead. Doctor Doom decides to turn over a new leaf. To do so, he adopts the mantle of Iron Man, over Stark's AI objections. From there Doom tries to prove himself while Ben Grimm and the forces of SHIELD try to take him down for old crimes. One of the series' highlights is a four-page, eighteen-panel fourth wall break from Mephisto explains how much he hates Doom.
SAGA OF THE SWAMP THING
- I finally finished Alan Moore's legendary run on Swamp Thing. It's one of the few times a guest appearance from Batman is simply a plot device. Moore is clearly moving away from superheroes during this. You can see the seeds of Watchmen and his later work shining around the edges. A solid finish to an epic run.
