Every year I like to read some of the genius work of our patron sinner to reset my perspective. The good Doctor saw through the bullshit and called everyone on it. Always.
I got Generation of Swine
for Christmas. I dove in yesterday.
Generation of Swine
is Hunter's musings on the 80s. They are profound and profane, just as they should be.
I was particularly struck by this passage:
The '86 Senate elections will be critical. A Democratic win would not change the world, but it would at least slow the berzerk white-trash momentum of the bombs-and-Jesus crowd. Those people have had their way long enough. Not even the Book of Revelation threatens a plague of vengeful yahoos. We all need a rest from this pogrom. Ronald Reagan is an old man. It is the rest of us who will face Armageddon.
This was written on September 1, 1986.
Substitute a date and a name and, well, nothing has changed in 30+ years. That's not an accident kids.
Not by a long shot.
So, while the old men line us up to knock us down and play parades to show off their military/penile might, let's all get distracted by the bi-annual display of meaningless sport that is the Olympics.
I'm on the record as not being a fan. I just don't get it. I just don't care. If these sports were really that important, we'd seem them more than every two years.
That being said, I'm not opposed to featuring an Olympic athlete as cheesecake to grab some extra views.
I'm kinda like NBC that way.
Say hello, again
, to Lindsey Vonn.
She's done with Tiger and back on the slopes.
And that's all I have to say about that.
