One of the biggest missteps of DC's New 52
initiative was the characterization of Superman. The history of the original superhero was dismissed, carved up and flushed to such an extent that the character was largely unrecognizable. The take on the character was so maligned that he was killed off in the final days of The New 52
and replaced with the classic character.
At the same time, Lex Luthor gained godhood on Apokolips and returned to to Metropolis as its new defender in the absence of Superman.
Got all that? Good, because that's where we pick up with Rebirth's Action Comics
Written by Dan Jurgens, Path of Doom collects Action Comics
957-962 and begins the job of rebuilding Superman. What better way to do that than to reintroduce the monster that killed Superman in the 1990s, Doomsday.
Just to clarify, any reference to Superman from here on out refers to the classic Superman who makes his return, sans red underwear, in this collection.
Luthor gets in over his head battling Doomsday and Superman is forced to come out of his self-imposed exile to stop the monster. Complicating matters is the appearance of Clark Kent at the site of the battle.
You're not alone in your confusion. Jimmy Olsen, who knew the dead hero was (a) Clark Kent tries to puzzle out how the Man of Steel can be in two places at once.
Doomsday destroys the city, wrecks Luthor's armor and catches a whiff of Superman's son. I didn't metion that Lois and Clark are married and have a kid? They do.
Needless to say there is a lot going on in this collection, including an appearance by Wonder Woman and a visit to Superman's DIY Fortress of Solitude.
In less hands than those of Jurgens this collection would probably bog down in the reboot. Jurgens handles it like the pro he is, keeping the action moving and the characters developing.
This is a great jumping on point for new fans OR
those who may have dropped the Superman titles during the New 52
. A lot of stuff is expertly expertly set up and I personally can't wait to see where all of these threads are going.
