Holidays are over and I am actually home for a weekend.
And what a disaster this place is. I haven’t cleaned in weeks. Probably should have asked for a maid for Christmas. Too late to take back my Legos?
Now that Bataan Death March that had been 2016 is over, let’s take a look back at a year of ranting and see what that got me.
Toy Fair 2017 is about six weeks away, which means we’ll finally know how we’re going to spend our Christmas money this spring. Last year, Funko impressed with a number of Pop, Dorbz, and Mini lines tied to some of the year’s ‘blockbusters’. I’m putting that in quotes because a blockbuster should make a ton of money AND entertain. ‘Batman V Superman’ and ‘Through the Looking Glass’ were a couple of snoozers and ‘Suicide Squad’ was a mess of a film. The toys, however, all looked pretty good, even the new Joker and Harley action figures they put out. Funko also rolled out a couple of new lines like Rock Candy, which I’m even more sure will replace Vinyl Vixens as they continue to expand the line, and MyMojis, which I thought had died mid-year with the release Pint Sized Heroes. Unfortunately, they have since released Disney and Marvel heads so I guess the funeral is off.
While collectors were disappointed that Funko did not showcase any new figures for the Super-Deluxe, Hikari and Vinyl Idolz lines, they were treated to new Super-Deluxe, Hikari and Vinyl Idolz figures as the year went on. They also surprised us with a new Mini-Hikari figure in the Rogue One Smuggler’s Bounty box, the one right after I let my subscription lapse. Also missing from Toy Fair, new wobblers that showed up in the middle of the year. They’re fun, but need a little tweaking.
Sadly, the Playmobil figures (that I liked) never made it to retail.
While I remain not a fan of the Pop Price Guide, and less of a fan of those who can’t use it properly (click through the price to get to the data before asking why something costs what it does), it remains the bronze standard by which most people value their collection. Late last summer, that was supposed to change when Beckett’s released their own price guide.
It might as well have never been published.
I see more and more collectors cite the PPG for pricing and I see more and more collectors point out the flaws of the PPG, but I never see anyone pricing their pops according Beckett’s Essential Guide to Funko Pops. That can’t be good, right?
Death by Pop
Everyone likes to sound off about the future of the hobby and how long before Pops turn into Beanie Babies. I did, too. I thought Pops would fall out of favor due to several reasons, now I’m down to pretty much one. Oversaturation.
At the time, I wrote the piece (June 7), Funko had released about 2000 figures, roughly one a day since the line started. In the 7 months since then, that number has increased to a little over 2300 not counting same numbered variants or exclusives, or anything announced since the middle of December. 300 figures in 210 days. No one can keep up with this pace.
Which is why….
….you should only collect what you like. Pithy.
Odds and Ends and Closing Thoughts
Let’s see…Fundays was fun, so was Fright Night. I'm very much an old school collector. Pop Tees seem to do well. I like the designs, but am just too old to wear them. Pop Home is still a thing that I hate. Funko is moving to a new headquarters and opening a brick and mortar store to compliment their online shop. The online shop, by the way, continues to impress with their weekly exclusives while continuing to disappoint with their weekly exclusives. At this point, branded Funko Salt should be a thing and part of the Pop Home line.
They’ve also started producing Shopkins figures, which sport the same round, creepy eyes that grace the faces of the new wobblers, and in a modified form, Rock Candy. The press release referred to the ‘Funko Style’. I think they look like Precious Moments.
And for any ReAction fans out there…that line is dead. Well, sort of. Funko and Super7 teamed to produce the first Alien ReAction figures. That partnership is now over (amiably) and Super7 has the ball back in their court. I actually like this move. ReAction is a niche line and it didn’t really work for that many of Funko’s licenses, especially newer properties like the Arrowverse. I think Super7 can knock this one out of the park.
Anything else I can think of….oh yeah, a Disney Subscription box is in the works. More on those later.
