A temporary street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, is home for the return of the Grand Prix of Europe. Championship points leader Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) started on pole, with Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) qualifying P2. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) posted an identical time to Ricciardo, but the Red Bull did it first and Vettel lined up third, teammate Kimi Raikkonen started next door.
Rosberg held the lead through Turn 1, followed by Ricciardo and Vettel. The running order remained in place at the end of the opening lap. Vettel passed Ricciardo for second during Lap 6, with the latter pitting the next lap. Rosberg’s lead on Vettel was more than 11 sec in Lap 10 (of 51). Sergio Perez (Force India) ran third.
The Rosberg lead grew to 14.7 sec in Lap 13. Perez pitted during Lap 17 with Valtteri Bottas (Williams) briefly assuming third. Bottas stopped three laps later and Raikkonen rose to third, climbing as high as second when Vettel took his first and only stop on Lap 21. Vettel returned to the track in P3 in front of Ricciardo.
Ricciardo took his second stop in Lap 24, moving Perez up fourth. Vettel passed Raikkonen for second during Lap 29
Perez overtook Raikkonen for third during the final lap. Rosberg won by 16.5 sec. Raikkonen’s fourth-place finish moved him into fourth in the driver standings, passing Ricciardo.
