The Academy Awards are Sunday, so it's time for the (mostly) annual predictions from the revered GonzoGeek panel: Bruce, John, Hunter, Sarah, Rey Swanko, film critic Randall Yelverton, Keith Flippen, working actor/acting instructor at The Actors Place, and Bruce’s copy of WWE 2K13 for Xbox 360
Today: Best Supporting Actress
The Nominees:
- Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight (+3300)
- Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl (-300)
- Rooney Mara, Carol (+205)
- Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs (+6600)
- Rachel McAdams, Spotlight (+600)
Odds provided by Bovada (formerly Bodog) on 2/9/16
BRUCE - As I sit here to write this I realize I haven't seen a single one of these movies. My wife is going to say that's because I declined to watch Spotlight last Saturday night. Sure, she's right, but don't tell her. I think I will play the Fast Times card and vote for Stacy Hamilton. She joins Jeff Spicoli, Charles Jefferson and Brad's Bud as an Oscar winner. JENNIFER JASON LEIGH
JOHN - Jennifer Jason Leigh snags it for her "Hateful Eight" performance.
HUNTER - This is the category that I have the biggest problem with. Several of the actresses in this category AREN’T supporting actresses. They are the lead actress! Kate Winslet, Rooney Mara, Alicia Vikander are all leads! The only thing that makes Jennifer Jason Leigh and Rachel McAdams “supporting” (they are both the actresses with the most lines in their films) is that their films were ensemble pieces. But…yeah. While I loved Kate Winslet in Steve Jobs (because I love everything Aaron Sorkin does), Alicia Vikander is utterly captivating as a woman that’s trying desperately to both support yet hold on to the love of her life. It’s rough to watch her go through her own trials and tribulations while Einar/Lili is going through their own struggle. ALICIA VIKANDER
SARAH - This a solid tie for two totally different actresses with polar performances. It will go to Kate Winslet cause she slays constantly, or Jennifer Jason Leigh as the under dog. KATE WINSLET
REY SWANKO - I loves The Hatefuls 8 but not the J-lay (not to be confused with the va-jay, that I do loves, if you catches my snowdrifts).
Yes, Alice Vikingander is a Danish womens. How is this a moving?
I did not watches her movings, so I am in the darks on Spotlight. No Oscaring for Grizzly McAdams.
Kate Windup? Did she not kills Leonidas DeCapricorn on the boat movings? Is that why he comes back from the dead in The Returnerer? She would be Oscared if he has stayed dead.
Because we have seen Mara Carol’s Roonies in her other movings, she is getting the Oscaring!
RANDALL - ROONEY MARA
KEITH - Here I would love to see Rooney Mara win for Carol. Lot of good supporting actress work this year. Full disclosure, I have not seen Jennifer Jason Leigh in Hateful Eight so I cannot make a fully informed call on this one.
WWE2K13 - As always, we will be setting up a fatal four way so the nominee with the longest odds gets cut. I was short on time so this year we went with Battle Royal rules. Today we say goodbye to Kate Winslet. As for the other nominees...
Jennifer Jason Leigh - Considered by many to be the best of her generation, but never quite got over as some less talented peers...DOLPH ZIGGLER
Alicia Vikander - an woman tries to forge her own identity while dealing with the peculiarities of her family members...CODY RHODES
Rooney Mara - IMDB on Carol...two women from very different backgrounds who find themselves in an unexpected love affair...sounds like the Rock 'n Sock Connection to me...MANKIND
Rachel McAdams - a crusader for the rights of the silent masses...JACK SWAGGER
The four combatants square off. Mara goes after McAdams early. Vikander and JJL go at one another and I see now that I should have used JBL and the western them for Leigh.
Mara takes McAdams down and quickly deposits her on the outside. That leaves the blondes to pound away on Mara.
JJL gets tossed over, but skins the cat and comes back into the fray. Mara steps back and lets Vikander and JJL battle it out for a while, getting in shots on both when the opportunity presents itself.
Vikander engages with Mara, whips her into the corner and attempts an elimination, but is stopped by JJL. JJL then hits a German suplex on Vikander. Mara grabs Vikander and heaves her to the outside.
JJL wastes no time getting her next shot in. She hits Mara with a Russian legsweep. Mara staggers to her feet and gets chopped into the corner. JJL takes a running step and delivers a dropkick that sends Mara to the cold hard floor outside.
