Well, if its Monday, it must be time to see what I did in with my pop culture weekend.
ROCKY III - Back at the beginning of summer I watched Rocky with my sons. Shortly thereafter, we saw a trailer for Creed. Being the GITs (geeks in training) that they are, they realized they might need to see the movies between to fully enjoy Creed. While they may not need to see ALL of them (I'm looking at you Rocky V), they are insistent, so this weekend we reached the half-way mark. I hadn't seen R3 since I saw it the theater way back win. I truly enjoyed the role reversal of Rocky and Clubber Lang. Mickey's death was still hard to take. And, damn, Carl Weathers was shredded. Up next? Cold War politics and Dolph Lundgren. There's no easy way out!
TRUE DETECTIVE - I finally finished the second season of HBO's ode to noir. No, it wasn't as good as the first season, but it wasn't as bad as so many reviews led me to believe. It was a full-on mash-up of every California pulp or noir stereotype. The seventh episode was ridiculously dialogue heavy and the finale provided the requisite amount of bloodshed. Season Two's biggest shortcoming was that it wasn't Season 1. Still, it was kinda fun in spots.
FIREFLY - Let's just be honest. I'm so late to this party that I shouldn't even have shown up. But today I found myself needing something to watch while doing some work around the house. Enter Whedon. Nice space western. It's not blowing me away like it has so many people, but its not bad. I'm sure I'll revisit this entry when I'm done with the show. Binge on!
