Killing Joke continues to make some of the most incredible music that has graced mankind’s ears in their over 37 years of existence. This phenomenal band has just released their 15th album entitled “Pylon” and it is simply mind blowing. I cannot think of a more urgent, compelling, important, relevant, captivating, aggressive, and beautiful record than this one for 2015. “Pylon” is pure sonic majesty and in its 10 tracks it takes the listener on a journey full of twists and turns that keep the listener begging for more. Thank god there is a second disc comprised of 5 additional tracks.
The amount of variety in the instrumentation on this record is dizzying. There are slow brooding songs and the signature mid-tempo post-apocalyptic disco-esque songs as well. I love the juxtaposition of moody and dancey as it appeals to the wide spectrum of human emotion as well as the desire to physically want to move to the music. At the same time that many of the tracks would be perfect for the dance-floor; in the end it is very much cerebral music. It demands an informed and mature ear to appreciate and understand the musicality as well as the lyrical content.
The seething commentary on topics and concepts ranging from Freedom, 9/11, The Middle East, and other Socio-political themes is inspiring and highly commendable. This is a band that is un-afraid to say what they think and believe in. And if you are completely unaware of these guys, I will only say that they are very left leaning in their political stance…which I love.
To Jaz Coleman, Youth, Geordie Walker, and Big Paul Ferguson I give a huge cheers and congratulations on once again creating a stunning musical masterpiece that will endure and shine for ages to come.
