So, what pop culture-y-ness have I partaken of since last we convened?
Let's see, shall we?
FROM DUSK TILL DAWN: THE SERIES - Remember in the mid-90s when we were all on such a Tarantino/Rodriguez violence high that we didn't even notice until it was too late that they'd pulled a fast one on us with From Dusk Till Dawn? A tightly plotted crime caper with Clooney at the height of his ER fame turned into a bloody vampire movie? It was a lot of fun and has, over the years, become a cult classic. Now, and I'm late to this party, Rodriguez's El Rey Network has created a series based on the film. Season 2 just started so I'm playing catch up. With 10 first season episodes, the series goes deeper into the characters, adds a few and generally jazzes up the mythology behind the bloodletting. It's a lot of fun. You should check it out.
FUTURES END - DC's (not so) New 52 initiative has always seemed like glorified fan fiction in places. "Here's what I'd do with Character X if it wasn't for all the damned continuity." So, when Futures End jumps the New 52 Universe forward ANOTHER five years its not unexpected. It's not horrible either. With the focus on mainly B and C players, Futures End gives it all time to breathe as we march toward the reveal of the big bad. In the hands of anyone short of Brian Azzarello it wouldn't work, but the man who brought us 100 Bullets pulls it off.
LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES - Pearland Little League's team fell short of the championship game, but they won yesterday's consolation game. In doing so they because the winningest team ever fielded by the league and the 3rd best team in the world. Well done boys. Well done.
