Wait? It's already August? How the hell did that happen?
Yes, this is/was supposed to be a regular feature. No, it hasn't been. I'm going to fix that.
So, what did I do this weekend?
RODDY PIPER - The Hot Rod passed away Friday afternoon. It was a shock to say the very least. My first exposure to Piper, outside of the Apter mags, was when he arrived on the scene in Georgia Championship Wrestling. He set the template for the hell announcer and was mesmerizing to watch. His interactions with Gordon Solie were priceless. Of course, Piper went on to bigger things (ie WrestleMania and Hell Comes to Frogtown). And, of course, there is They Live! Piper as Nada in a John Carpenter allegory about 80s greed. Kicking ass and chewing gum. There is a 15ish minute fight scene in the movie that is spectacular. According to Carpenter, Piper helped choreograph the whole thing. It showed. I remember sitting in a darkened theater watching it with Stephe. The people around us didn't recognize Piper (WHAT?), so we started calling the fight in our best JR and Heenan voices. Sure it was rude, but so was a room full of people not recognizing the Hot Rod. Its been a tough couple of months for us old school wrestling fans. RIP Roddy.
YES! - WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan's autobiography just came out. One of my sons is a huge fan of Mr. Bryan's so I picked up the book to give it the required parental pre-read. Turns out the book is a good read, especially given that it had to pass through WWE press before publication. Equal time is given to Mr. Bryan's time in the indys and ROH. He's allowed to discuss his frustration with some of his WWE booking. Unfortunately, a couple of the road stories make it a no go for the boy. Still, for adult fans of the former American Dragon its a solid read.
FREAKS AND GEEKS - See! It wasn't all wrestling related. I've promised my boys that when they were old enough I'd let them watch this cult gem. We started last week and we got through "Kim Kelly is My Friend" last night. Its interesting to see they watch it, as they know all of the players from other things, whereas when I watched it originally they were all largely unknown. Still, they are digging the show and we will likely finish it before they head back to school in a couple of weeks.
