In 2010, actor Zachary Levi
founded The Nerd Machine
, a website that celebrates nerd culture. In 2011, the website expanded with the creation of Nerd HQ
, an oasis of nerd-dom outside of the confines of the Convention Center during the madness of Comic-Con
This year, for the first time, the GonzoGeeks got a chance to take in Nerd HQ.
Thursday morning Stephe and I picked up our badges and headed into HQ to see what was what.
Demos of Star Wars Battlefront were everywhere. There was an X-Men: Days of Future Past photo booth. There was a Loot Crate shooting gallery.
There was also a bar.
Please note the subtle marketing.
Stephe and I hit ordered a pair of Nerd Alerts. Sure it was only 11 am in San Diego, but we were both still working on Central Time.
The drinks were pretty good. Well, until you hit the Cuervo Gold at the bottom of the cup. Then it was like drinking gasoline.
The centerpiece of the Nerd HQ experience is the Conversations for a Cause series. In the intimate confines of Nerd HQ, Levi gathers friends for panels with fans. Seats to the panels cost $22 and the proceeds go to Operation Smile.
I was fortunate enough to sit in on three of these panels.
BADASS WOMEN - featuring Yvonne Strahovski, Felicia Day, Krysta Rodriguez, Bree Turner and Mercedes Masohn
ZACH'S MYSTERY PANEL - featuring Yvette Nicole Brown, Scott Porter, Retta, Colin O'Donoghue, Jennifer Morrison and Josh Dallas
If you click on the highlighted names above, you can watch the panels yourself.
Nerd HQ was a great experience. Giving fans another way to express their fandom amidst the madness of Comic-Con was a welcome change. We look forward to taking it in again next year.
