First of all, there's a helluva lot of punctuation in that title isn't there?
The sixth volume of New 52 Detective Comics collects issues 30-34 and Annual 3.
It deals with the arrival of a new designer drug, Icarus (The Ick), in Gotham City and the efforts of Batman and Harvey Bullock to stop it from reaching the masses.
This volume of 'Tec also deals with the death of Damian Wayne and the general trickiness of family dynamics.
Oh, and the origin of the Calendar Man.
That's a lot of leg work to get done in 5 single issues and an Annual, but in the sure hands of Francis Manapul and Brian Buccellato this collection makes for compelling reading.
After a humanitarian Wayne Enterprises effort is scuttled by the Icarus induced death of his partner, Bullock is determined to pin the crime on Bruce Wayne. This puts Batman and Bullock on the same trail with similar goals.
Detective Comics has always been at its best when it tells more street level stories. Its different perspective on Batman and Gotham always adds needed texture to the Bat mythos.
By tying the investigations of Harvey Bullock and the Dark Knight together, Icarus pushes the narrative forward at a breakneck pace without losing any of the substance of the mystery behind the new drug.
A top shelf collection from a creative team hitting on all cylinders.
ICARUS is on shelves now.
