Hmm. I’m behind.
Well, I have a good reason. I’ve been reading Mark Cushman’s ‘These are the Voyages’ books and binge-watching TOS on Netflix. It’s fun, but it leaves you little time to do much else.
And then Daredevil came out.
So this past weekend, I decided to take a break and do something different. I collect vinyl toys and every now and again I like to customize one. Meet ‘Away Team Freddy’ (formerly 'Red Shirt Freddy").
Don’t leave the planet without him.
This week’s donor toy is a Gemini Collectible’s Exclusive Retro Freddy made by Funko, the same company that makes Wacky Wobblers and Pop! figures. I believe the count on these was 480 pcs (and really, I should know, I collect the damn things). It is now down to 479…probably a lot lower. I’m not the only one who uses this figure as a base.
Freddy was completely taken apart and repainted. Yes, from the balls on the top of his crown down to his knock off Chuck Taylors. The only part of him that didn’t get a fresh coat of paint was his freckled little face.
I had started off wanting to do a Captain Freddy, but couldn’t find the right Command mustard-gold and didn’t feel like mixing one. Then I thought I would do Science/Medical blue, but I wanted to get started and it was too late to go to the hobby shop to buy new paint. Since I already had a red in hand….
Surprisingly, deciding on a color scheme for the crown and shoes was kind of difficult. Did I do black balls on a gold crown, red balls on a black crown, red shoes with black laces, black shoes with gold laces, etc., etc. Thank you, Photoshop.
The whole project took about 5 days. Most of that time was spent waiting for coats of paint to dry. I cut a stencil free-hand for the delta. It turned out better than expected. I’m not 100% happy with it, but I’ll live.
Down the line I do plan on doing a Blue and Gold Freddy, as well as a special ‘Trek’ related piece. Blue and Gold should be easy now that I’ve figured out the color scheme. The special piece is relatively straight forward and will probably get done next. Not sure when I’m going to get to any of these, but rest assured they will be posted here when they’re finished.
