Marvel's Phase 3 Announced

You remember that time (yesterday) when everyone was all super excited because Marvel was going to announce Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange? And everyone was freaking out at the HUGE NEWS from Marvel! Remember that? Do ya? Well, Marvel was like “F*#K THAT! Here’s some bigger news!” Today, Marvel finally unveiled their plans for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the releases of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant Man on the horizon (it’s not really even on the horizon yet [May is so far away {I feel like Cindy Lou Who singing “Where are you Christmas?” <But…ya know…about May>}]), Phase 2 of Marvel’s little MCU experiment is coming to a close. There were some projects we already knew where heading our way. Cap 3. Thor 3. Doctor Strange. Guardians 2. We knew these things. But earlier today, Marvel’s Kevin Feige grabbed a microphone…just to drop it!

So without further ado!! Phase 3!

CAPTAIN AMERICA 3: CIVIL WAR (May 6, 2016)

DR. STRANGE (November 4, 2016)

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 (May 5, 2017)

THOR: RAGNAROK (July 28, 2017)

BLACK PANTHER (November 3, 2017)

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 1 (May 4, 2018)

CAPTAIN MARVEL (July 6, 2018)

INHUMANS (November 2, 2018)

AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR PART 2 (May 3, 2019)

So…some real quick hits. Ready? GO!

Captain America 3 was originally teased as having the subtitle of “The Serpent Society,” but that was just misdirection to hit you with “Civil War.” Civil War, in the comics, was a MASSIVE event that rocked the Marvel Universe for many years afterwards. It put Tony Stark’s Iron Man and Steve Roger’s Captain America directly in opposition of one another, and when all was said and done in the comics, it didn’t work out to well for Cap. Obviously, some of the big players from the comic event aren’t going to be available here in the MCU (most notably Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four), but Marvel has a plan. The Cap movies are always the one that set the tone for the MCU moving forward, and I expect this one to have a shocking ending to prepare for the bigger things to come in Phase 3.

Dr. Strange taps into another world that hasn’t been accessed in the MCU. The realm of magic and sorcery. After the success of Guardians, Marvel is more willing to take chances and show audiences things that they haven’t seen in the cinematic universe. And if the casting news of Benedict Cumberbatch is correct, Stephen Strange will have the gravitas that the Sorcerer Supreme deserves.

Black Panther is going to get his tease in Avengers 2 and make an appearance in Cap 3. And with the official casting announcement of the VERY talented Chadwick Boseman, the film already has a star.

And then the big dog! Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. This is what the MCU has been building to since Thor showed the Infinity Gauntlet. The Infinity War story in the comics won’t be what they go with here. They are more likely to follow the Infinity Gauntlet storyline, but Marvel has done this before. Age of Ultron was a comic book storyline before it was the subtitle to the second Avengers film, and the film won’t be following that comic book storyline. As for the film being split in two, there is no way that Part 1 ends happily. And I’m not talking “Oh Empire Strikes Back didn’t end happy.” No…I’m talking…lots and lots of death.

Captain Marvel, they’ve already announced, will be Carol Danvers. That means that a brand new female character will get her own standalone film before Black Widow, but this makes more sense as a standalone film than Black Widow does. While Natasha has a great backstory and would make for an awesome espionage packed film, her story wouldn’t really be able to add to the much larger universe that Marvel is creating in Phase 3. No one has been cast yet as Carol Danvers, but my hope is for Chuck’s Yvonne Strahovski.

The Inhumans are another one of those situations similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Introducing the audience to something VERY alien and VERY new. And this film is just as important to the plans that Marvel has going forward as the success of Guardians was. Guardians worked and that let Marvel know that audiences were prepared for the more cosmic direction that Phase 3 was going to take. And if Inhumans works, it will let Marvel lay the groundwork for more people to have more spectacular powers in the future.

So yeah. Phase 3. Four new franchises being started (One with an African American lead. One with a female lead.) I’m excited.
