USCC: Detroit – Taylors take the win; Ferrari tops GT

Richard Westbrook (#90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP) won the pole. Gustavo Yacaman (#42 OAK Racing Morgan-Nissan) started fourth and came into the race fourth in the standings. Ricky and Jordan Taylor (#10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette DP) won the race by just 0.207 sec over Westbrook and co-driver Michael Valiante. Olivier Pla brought the #42 in third.

The win was Jordan Taylor’s third straight at Detroit, having won the last two events held there as part of the Grand-Am series. Ricky Taylor had led the 1 hr 40 min race for 48 min when the green flag waved to end the race’s final caution period. Taylor stayed out front until the race’s final lap, when Joao Barbosa (#5 Action Express Racing Corvette DP) passed him on the inside of Turn 3, making contact in the process. The contact caused Barbosa’s left-rear tire to go out, however, and Taylor retook the lead for good.

After winning the fifth race of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship the Taylor Brothers departed for Le Mans to participate in the 24 Hours of Le Mans mandatory test session. Ricky Taylor will co-drive an LM P2 car, with Jordan Taylor and Westbrook joining Corvette Racing’s LM GTE Pro effort.

GT also went down to the wire, Alessandro Balzan (#63 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 Italia) winning by 0.297 sec, ahead of Mario Farnbacher (#23 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT) and Christopher Haase (#48 Paul Miller Racing Audi R8 LMS). Balzan’s co-driver was Jeff Westphal. Balzan took the lead when Tomy Drissi (#22 Muehlner Motorsports America Porsche 911 GT) pitted with 33 minutes remaining. It was Balzan’s second North American sports car victory and Westphal’s first.
