Peace Out, 2013 Mix

New Year’s Eve is always a strange time for me. It’s always a night of retrospection. I try to look back on all of the crazy things that have made the pending expiration of a year so important. And the way that I always do this is to make a CD. Yeah. I know. It’s very high school of me, but I’m a huge fan of mixes. I’ve done my Hunter’s Christmas Mix every year since 2002. This summer, a few of us did our Gonzogeek’s Summer Jams. And every year since 2007, I’ve done what I call the “Peace Out” mix. This year’s 2013 mix includes songs that were extremely important to the soundtrack of a very crazy and amazing year for me. A year that included Thirsty Orange and my first ever San Diego Comic Con (which lead to me interviewing one of my comedy idols, Patton Oswalt). Finally meeting some of my fellow Gonzogeeks. Having the biggest Gonzogeek article of the year (HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN!!!). Winning the Gonzogeek Pigskin Picks. Losing the Wrestlemania Picks. Transforming into an #upandcoming standup comedian (I have the confidence of a tall man!) and getting to perform alongside some amazing comics. 2013….big year. So without further ado…..

PEACE OUT, 2013

NOTE: Some tracks on the list do not appear on Spotify.

1.      Pusher Love Girl – Justin Timberlake

Man, that JT. Justin Timberlake is just wonderful. Right, ya’ll? From his music to his hilarious appearances on SNL and Jimmy Fallon. There isn’t much that this man can’t do. And on that list this year was make an album where any of the songs are under 4 and a half minutes long (which can be refreshing in the time of the 3 minute perfect pop song [but seriously? One of the songs on the Complete 20/20 Experience is 11 and a half minutes long! {That’s like 4 “Bye Bye Bye’s”}]). I included Tunnel Vision on my Summer Jams list, but thanks to my roommates love of this song, no one could escape this Pusher Love Girl.

2.      My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)  – Fall Out Boy

This CD, Fall Out Boy’s Save Rock and Roll, was easily (EASILY) my most listened to album of 2013. And if that makes me a high school girl, THEN SO BE IT! (I’ll just be over here with my complete boxed sets of Dawson’s Creek and The OC. Don’t mind me) This was their first single released in three years. The band’s return lead to me buying tickets to see them at the GORGEOUS Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Which lead to meeting some cool people. One of which found her way on to this list. More on that later.

3.      Chloe (You’re The One I Want) – Emblem3

There’s always a few songs on this mix that don’t make a lot of sense. Emblem3’s Chloe is DEFINITELY one of those. It became a weird joke anthem for us this year. It’s terrible. I know this. I’m well aware. But it’s JUST SO DAMN CATCHY! It’s my “Call Me Maybe” of 2013. And isn’t it funny that I’ve picked to songs that have parentheticals in the title (now where have I seen something like that before? [Nope. No clue.])?

4.       Beer – Reel Big Fish

I mentioned Thirsty Orange earlier in the article. It was a really great day. Regardless of everything that happened AFTER that day, that’s a particular day that I can look back upon fondly. It also marked the first time that I turned The Plastic Spoon into a video segment. AND I GOT TO BE A CELEBRITY BEER JUDGE! Are you kiddin me?! I wanna put that on my resume for the rest of ever!

5.      Dumb Ways to Die - Emily Lubitz

Such an adorably catchy song…about people dying horrible deaths. Originally used as a public service announcement in Australia about train safety, it eventually became a smartphone game. Just…listen to the song and watch cute cartoons bite the dust.

6.      Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus

Tell me you haven’t sang this song to yourself at one point! TELL ME! YOU HAVEN’T! SANG THIS! TO YOURSELF! ………You can’t! Everyone has done it. Love or hate Miley (I just so happen to love her [#teammiley]), you have to admit that she had a big year. She somehow managed to create a crazy amount of controversy and then turn around and do something classy and professional to balance it out. What else would you expect from someone voted 2013’s Worst Dressed….and also Best Dressed…in the SAME article.

7.      Lonely Boy – The Black Keys

Ever do a hypothetical for yourself? Well, a fun question arose for me this year. “If you had a comedy special, what would be the song that played when you came out?” After some discussion, I settled on this song by The Black Keys. I’m not a huge Black Keys fan (I mean, I don’t hate them or anything…I just don’t really listen to them), but I love the feeling that the song gives you. So…hopefully…one day, it’ll play me out.

8.      Rap God – Eminem

GOAT! Greatest of ALL Time! Jay-Z is amazing, but he’s no Eminem. And Kanye can eat a dick. Eminem’s most recent album is a wonderful retrospective on his entire career. And this song is the keystone that sells the whole thing. Word play. Internal rhyme schemes. And the amazing “Lyrics comin at you at supersonic speeds” bit…..damn.

9.      Shout It Out Loud – Kyle Kinane

I always try to include a standup comedy track on each Peace Out Mix. Last year, Patton Oswalt got that track. This year, I had the fortune (or misfortune depending on how you look at it) of discovering Kyle Kinane. He’s HILARIOUS! Problem is….we um….kinda look alike. And have similar styles. Fuck.

10.   45 – The Gaslight Anthem

One of two songs from my Summer Jams mix that survived to the Peace Out Mix. All the things I said this summer…still apply.

11.   Will the Circle Be Unbroken – Troy Baker & Courtnee Draper

This is a gorgeous song from the best video game of the year, Bioshock Infinite.

12.   Young Volcanos – Fall Out Boy

Every year, I use two songs by one band. I don’t know what that is, but I do. And…again….Fall Out Boy’s Save Rock and Roll was listened to a disproportionate amount this year. So FOB gets the second song.

13.   Same Love – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis (Feat. Mary Lambert)

I believe what I believe. And not to get too political, but I believe in marriage equality. Say what you will about “Thrift Shop”, but this song became a wonderful anthem for that struggle.

14.   The Touch – Stan Bush

YESSSSSSSS!!!!! There hasn’t been a better song on the soundtrack of life this year than “The Touch.” A song we, as a collective group of friends, have heard many times, it got brought back to our attention as part of the soundtrack to this year’s Saints Row IV. From there, it found its way into our daily lives. An anthem for Team Drink Hard in the 2013 Kingsport Idiotarod (AUDA!!!). A potential comedy special entrance song. A way to piss off other people at the bar. Ya know….the usual.

15.   Blurred Lines – Robin Thicke (Feat. T.I. and Pharrell)

Ok…so…controversial lyrics aside. Controversial video aside (BUT REALLY, THOUGH!?! That video….). This song gets into your head, and it will not leave. It’s this year’s “Moves Like Jagger” or “Somebody That I Used to Know.” I heard it hundreds of time, and I’m still ok hearing it…..and that video.

16.   Cool Kids – Echosmith

Ever find a band by accident? That’s what Echosmith was. I literally couldn’t tell you how I found them in the first place. I know they were on Warped Tour this year (man, Warped Tour has changed), so maybe that’s how? But I didn’t even go to Warped Tour….I dunno. But this Partridge-esque group of siblings made a catchy little song that I rather enjoy.

17.   The Car Song – Cat Empire

This song was put on Ashley’s Summer Jams mix. Here’s what she said (and I’m using it, because she isn’t around anymore): “A perfect song about procrastination to enjoy being able to do nothing to this summer. If there is a song that could perfectly sound like what summer feels like this is it.”

18.   Cups (Movie Version) – Anna Kendrick

Ok…so…it’s from Pitch Perfect. And I live in a house full of dudes, but the second most watched movie in this house (behind The Avengers) is Pitch Perfect. It’s just so pleasant! And Anna Kendrick is an amazing actress (regardless of those Twilight things) that can sing her ass off. This song kinda took over Youtube with a bajillion different covers. And in case you’re wondering….I can’t do this.

19.   Draw The Line – Ally Burnett

Remember that trip to Nashville to see Fall Out Boy that I mentioned earlier? And I was like…hey, I met some cool people. Well, Ally Burnett was one of them. She’s a musician that had some of her music featured on MTV’s Jersey Shore (haven’t seen the show [but I have seen Snookie get PUNCHED LIKE A MAN!]). Over the months since then, I’ve had the fortune to be able to refer to her as a friend. She recently released her latest EP, 27. And, in my opinion, the best song of the bunch is Draw The Line.

20.   Get Lucky – Daft Punk (Feat. Pharrell)

The other song from my Summer Jams Mix that survived.  See #10.

21.   Skinny Love – Birdy

This song has been in my mix longer than any other song this year. It made an appearance in the Season 3 premiere of Being Human on January 14th and has stayed around since then. I had the opportunity to interview some of the amazing cast of Being Human this year at Comic Con, so it found a way to not only be one of my favorite songs of the year, but it also attached itself to an important memory of the year. It’s a twofer!

22.   Stonehenge – Ylvis

Yes….The Fox was the bigger song. It’s the one that people shit their pants over…..but not I. This love anthem to the mystery surrounding Stonehenge is far more hilarious, and a perfect way to end the year. “Aww that’s sweet. Skinny Love is a nice peaceful song. Yay. What a nice mix, Hunter!” “WHO THE FUCK BUILT THE STONEHEEEEEENGE!!!!!!!”

Geeks
