GonzoGeek Staff Summer Jams: Chris

It’s summertime already down here in Houston, and I’ve risen to the heat by compiling a Summer 2013 playlist. There’s some new stuff. Some medium-old stuff. And some ancient stuff. Regardless of age, however, each song stands on its own as a great summer-themed (to me) anthem. Even more spectacularly, their arc, played from beginning to end, roughly corresponds to the arc of any number of my 3-month breaks from school back when. And after all, summer really is for the k...

Black Star Riders: Thin Lizzy reborn

BLACK STAR RIDERS - the new band formed by members of the reborn THIN LIZZY -- Ricky Warwick (vocals), Scott Gorham (guitar), Damon Johnson (guitar) and Marco Mendoza (bass) -- with new addition Jimmy DeGrasso on drums - will release its debut album, All Hell Breaks Loose on May 28 via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. While THIN LIZZY will continue on an occasional basis, BLACK STAR RIDERS is a full-time band described as "the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story". All Hell Breaks Lo...

Friday LinkFrogging - 12/17/10

Christmas is in the air kids. Its also in my car, my house, my wallet and my kids. Its been another fun year for us here at the 'Geek.  We've seen our little site blossom and we're on the verge of taking another big step next year.  Stay tuned. In any event, this will be our final LinkFrogging of the year.  We'll take next week off to celebrate Christmas and then, on New Year's Eve, we'll revisit our top ten posts of the year. But before we sign off, I want to gi...

Friday LinkFrogging - 8/13/10

Fools' gold out of their mines
The girls are soaking wet
No tounge's drier than mine
I'll come when I get back

“Yah mule, yah!” – Yosemite Sam

Carrot? Stick? CHEESCAKE! It makes every day feel like Friday.

When Bruce first re-handed me the reigns of this august institution, Blake Lively was gonna be our girl. She had ‘geek cred, given her‘Green Lantern’ casting, and had recently caught the full attention of yours truly while sitting on the Comic-Con panel for same. A quick internet search and….nothin’.  Well, not nothin’, but nothing that looked better than the Comic-Con pics themselves.

But then the wonders of the interwebz reminded me that the live-action movie adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ graphic novels opens this week, and who did my roving eye espy?: Ms. Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

MEW plays Ramona Flowers, the potential siren to Michael Cera’s good-guy-trapped-in-a-world-he-only-partially-made title character. But it’s hardly her first turn through GG-friendly territory. Since graduating from Disney’s ‘Sky High,’ she has appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Death Proof’ and as Bruce Willis’ daughter in ‘Live Free or Die Hard.’ Like your films more dramatic? Try her turns in ‘Factory Girl’ and Robert Kennedy pic ‘Bobby’ on for size.

And lest the casual geek decide that this whole 'Scott Pilgrim....' thing is just a bunch of greasy kid stuff, it should be pointed out that director/co-writer Edgar Wright's previous credits include 'Shaun Of The Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz.'

And now, if our new hostess will please pull the curtain…

On to the Links. Walk this way.

Galactic Cowboys (Alan Doss, drums; Ben Huggins, vocals; Monty Colvin, bass, Wally Farkas, guitar) will be playing their first live dates in 10 years less than one month from now. Three dates in Texas in three nights: Aug. 13-15; Dallas, Austin, and Houston. The band agreed to talk with GonzoGeek in advance of these dates to let you know what’s going on. Part 1 of this three-part interview saw Monty and Ben discussing the reunion. This second part—still with Monty and Ben&...
