By mid-December 2008 the year's tally for pirate attacks off the coast of Somalia alone totalled 109, with 42 ships successfully hijacked, and 14 vessels (with 268 crew) still being held hostage. Included among these were a Saudi supertanker (Sirius Star) and a ship carrying ex-Soviet tanks (Faina).
The International Chamber of Commerce's International Maritime Bureau monitors piracy globally, with a multi-national naval fleet stationed off Africa's east coas...
Kuwaiti Company Makes Huge Gas Find in Texas
So let me get this straight; letting China (CNOOC) buy Unocal was somehow an afront to both our security and our sensibilities as Americans, but it's OK to lease onshore drilling rights in the US to companies from Kuwait?? How does that benefit us in this time of dire need?
It probably doesn't, but given Halliburton's involvement and the Bush family's Saudi and Kuwaiti ties, it's not hard to imagine who it does benefit.
I have held for years now that the damage brought about by the reign of George W. Bush can most clearly be measured by our (the United States') diminished standing in the world. This stretches will beyond the war in Iraq. Put plainly, while he has pursued a course of unilateralism bordering on the isolationist, the rest of the world has figured out it can get by just fine—and maybe even better—without us.
I see dozens of examples of this each and every day. The one at the link ...

A physicist at the world’s biggest scientific experiment – the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva – is speculating that the failure of the collider soon after it was switched on in September was c...
We made it through Ike OK. Especially compared to so many others who have suffered and lost so much.
Sunset, Friday night, Sept. 12, 2008
At 11:36 pm on Friday, Sept. 12 our power went out. Ike still hadn't made landfall. But the amount of water pouring into Galveston via storm surge was already quite frigtening, even from afar. Mandatory evacution orders had been issued long before. That night the wind blew. It blew hard. We lost a small tree in the backyard and four br...
One year ago, it was going to be about Iraq. As recently as 24 hours ago, it was about the economy. Some tried to make it about race. But here, having watched the maps for an entire day, are the 3 real reasons Barack Obama is our new President.
1) Hatred of George W. Bush
2) City mouse vs. country mouse
3) A generational shift in the electorate.
Let's go into this with both our eyes and our hearts wide open. We rejected fear. We accepted hope.
Barack Obama won.
I know it happened more than a week ago, but I thought posting this transcript could still add some value with one week to go before the elections. His reasoning is, and almost always has been, sound.
He has left them behind. We should too.
I know both of these individuals very well now. I've known John for 25 years as your setup said. And I've gotten to know Mr. Obama quite well over the past two years. Both of them are distinguished Americans who are...
The following is an open letter from Charles Lewis of Coach House Capital proudly proclaiming his own Bill Ayers connections and putting the record straight regarding Barack Obama's.
My wife, Penny Sebring, and I have confessions to make. We've been "palling around" with that 1960's radical from Chicago – Bill Ayers – for years.
Think of it – Penny, my petite, demure, Peace Corps, Northwestern PhD, school-improvement expert, rese...
We could drill everywhere in the U.S. and not meet our energy needs or reduce prices. The U.S. contains only 3 or 4 percent of the world's proven oil and gas reserves. As the U.S. Department of Interior has indicated, at the most, only 4 billion barrels of oil reserves lie off the entire Atlantic coast - about a 200-day supply based on current U.S. consumption of 20 million barrels a day.
We do not need to open new areas for drilling. Four times more natural gas is available in areas a...
I've maintained since W. was re-elected that the only way the Dems could lose in 2008 was if they nominated Hilary. This has been their election to lose for almost 4 years now, but darn it if they don't seem like they're finally getting around to doing it....
Among the many things that Hilary's insistance on staying in the race demonstrates is the primacy with which she views herself. She wants to be President so badly it is becoming evident she is willing to burn down the entire party to ...
