Lo-Pan - From Columbus, Earth

While preparing with Loond for SXSW earlier this year, the two bands I was most interested in seeing were Lo-Pan and Red Giant. Red Giant didn't end up making the trip, cutting the suspense greatly since Lo-Pan were one of the first bands up upon my arrival. On record, there was something almost ethereal about Lo-Pan. Between Jeff Martin's vocals and the twisting yet lockstep bass/guitar work of Skot Thompson and Brian Fristoe, the doors of perception were blown wide open...

UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill Predictions

A month after having their biggest event in history (UFC 129 in Toronto), the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns home to Las Vegas with a “down” card, a rare event without a title fight or marquee showdown between big names. UFC 130 was at one point going to host the third match between Gray Maynard and lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, but injuries to both forced them off the card. A semi-main event of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson vs. Matt Hamill has been bumped up to the main event, with a heavyweight contender eliminator between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson filling out the second slot.

‘Hamill’ Is Only Inspirational If You’re A Deaf Kid Who Dreams Of Becoming An Asshole

“Hamill” tells the story of UFC fighter Matt Hamill's struggles with hearing impairment, focusing heavily on his first two years of college.  It is a boring, ham-handed attempt at making “Deaf Rocky” and ultimately presents the thesis that everyone in the world is an asshole, and being deaf shouldn’t stop you from joining the party.

F1: C2A (Countdown to Austin) 2012 - Spain down, Monaco looms

Photo: Vodaphone McLaren Mercedes Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain, Stop 5 in the 2011 F1 calendar, feels like home to many of the drivers, it being the series' primary off-season testing track. It's also really home turf to Fernando Alonso (Ferrari) and Jaime Alguersuari (Toro Rosso), the two Spaniards in competition this year. More remarkable than any of that, however, is that it had been from pole for 10 straight years. This string included Mark Webber's (Red Bull) victory in 20...

Vacation? What is that?

I’m seeing lots of articles about vacation time, etc on that thing I like to call the interweb, the past week. I guess because it’s almost summer (well, for us in Texas, it already is) and this is when most people in the world other than the US of A actually take a vacation. It makes me sick to read how people in Europe receive between 4 and 11 paid weeks off per year. It’s pathetic that we Americans in comparison receive 2 weeks. Even more pathetic is how many of us ...

ATT Customer Service: No, you haven't resolved my issue

My home internet connection is down, again.  It won't work.  Little red and green blinky lights on the modem, just like last week.  They had assured me that everything was fine and working then, so this week's outage was, of course, a complete surprise.   Last week was a total customer service cluster fuck.   Three phone calls to three different departments and here's what I learned.   If you open a service ticket for static on the line and one for ...

The Jibbies & Loond Show - Episode 008 - Haunted Ju Ju Bone

Here's how you know you're in the game....You're a Scandanavian thrash band putting out your 7th album and the interwebs are set ablaze with competing commentaries regarding how much it either sucks or rules. J&L join the fray with their own dissection of the Haunted's 'Unseen.' The verdict is the first of what ends up being a number of reviews of both old (Malice) and new heavy music. Finland and Brooklyn end up featuring heavily, before our duo eventually settle into the familiar lands of fire, chicks, mayhem, and the devil. Ain't that the way it always goes?

This episode recorded before but assembled after Rapture 2011.

Hello all. You might remember reading in John's bio that he's now a freelance journalist. He's currently buried under a couple of major deadlines. Look for his return sometime after Memorial Day... Thank you.
