Review - Krypton: The Complete First Season

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the Blu-Ray I reviewed in this Blog Post.  The opinions I share are my own.

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

There is a fantastical world.  The people of this world are ruled by the Houses of the ruling class.  The common people live in squalor below.  This world is filled with lies and deception.  This world faces an existential threat from beyond.  A vision of the future is all that can save this world.

So, does it sound familiar?

No, I’m not talking about Game of Thrones.

I’m talking about Krypton.

Yes, the SyFy network’s take on the planet that gave birth to Superman has all of this and more.

Here’s your synopsis:

What if Superman never existed? Set two generations before the destruction of Superman’s home planet, Krypton follows a young Seg-El, the legendary Man of Steel’s grandfather, who is faced with a life and death conflict – save his home planet or let it be destroyed in order to restore the fate of his future grandson. With Krypton’s leadership in disarray and the House of El ostracized, Seg fights alongside Earthly time-traveler Adam Strange to redeem his family’s honor and protect the ones he loves while saving the future of his legacy from DC Super-Villain Brainiac.

I’m going to admit that I was skeptical when I heard about Krypton.  So skeptical, in fact, that I didn’t even watch it during its initial run.

I was wrong.

Krypton is a fun take on an unexplored corner of the DC Universe.  We all know Krypton explodes, but now we get to see how the people get to that inescapable fate.

Throw in an unexpected Romeo and Juliet star-crossed lovers between the houses of El and Zod and you’ve got stories for days.

I really enjoyed Krypton.  It was a surprising enjoyable deep dive into a mythology I thought I knew inside and out.

Krypton:  The Complete First Season is available now on digital, DVD and Blu-Ray.
