The crew from Adult Swim’s newest show, National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle (NTSF:SD:SUV::), didn’t have a lot of time during their Comic-Con panel, but they made the most of it, shooting a brand new scene to air in a future episode.
The panel, featuring producer Jon Stern, creator/star Paul Scheer, cast members Brandon Jackson, June Diane Raphael and Martin Starr, writer Curtis Gwinn and guest star Robert Picardo, started out with a screening of a future episode featuring Adam Scott. The show is a satirical sendup of shows like 24 and...well, basically 24. The title implies some aim at the CSI-type shows, but there wasn’t much of it in the episode they screened. It doesn’t matter, because 24 was so ripe for parody (and so close in genre to action films like Die Hard) that there is plenty of material.
Following the episode, there were only 11 minutes left in the panel, so instead of taking a few questions from the crowd, they planned to shoot a while scene for a future season of the show. In it, Martin Starr (playing the twin brother of his character on the show) threatens to kidnap Comic-Con and move it to Vancouver before being chased from the room by Scheer’s hero character.
There wasn’t much time to see how the bread was made, but the interesting part of the scene was seeing how hands-on Scheer was when they were getting set up. He moved Picardo (who was mostly there as a guest) to a speaking role to take advantage of his acting chops, then gave the crowd some direction to get the shots they needed.
You could see how invested Scheer is in the show, and based on the reaction it got from the crowd in attendance, that passion for comedy is showing through in NTSF:SF:SUV::, a great companion piece for Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim.
NTSF:SD:SUV:: airs Thursdays at 12:15 a.m. on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block.
