After a few lean weeks, I finally got a chance to get back on the pop culture horse and I got back on it in a big way. Here's what I dug.
THE UMBRELLA ACADEMY
- I ground through the new Netflix adaptation of Dark Horse's comic series over the best couple of weeks. I've got to say I enjoyed. it. Not having read the source material, I came into the show with no preconceived ideas of what to expect. I was pretty sure Gerard Way had crafted his own take on the X-Men. I wasn't completely wrong. There is a lot of X-Men in the Umbrella Academy. There is also a crap ton of Doom Patrol. It's an odd superhero story, but a lot of fun to watch.
- the latest entry in the MCU was solid. I was especially impressed with the fact that they went right into the Kree/Skrull war without caring if the new and/or casual fans knew what was going on. The movie served as double origin story. We learned the backstory for both Carol Danvers and Nick Fury. The movie added another layer to the growing cosmic branch of the MCU. It also gave us Project Pegasus. That's another layer of the onion that can be peeled back. And, we've gotten a perfect setup for Endgame
. Well done Marvel. Well done.
- the wife came home Friday and said we needed to watch this one. Four episodes in and the modern western starring Kevin Costner has me rapt. There is a lot of Dallas
and a fair amount of Lone Star
in the DNA of the story of the Dutton family. They own land, influence policy and war with the local Indian tribe. There is a black sheep son and a troubled daughter. Most importantly, its created and helmed by Taylor Sheridan, the brains behind Hell or High Water. A must watch for fans of the western...old or new.
