Monday Meandering - 8/27/18
Welcome to Monday kids.  Let's get right to it, shall we?

BATMAN AND THE SIGNAL - as previously stated, I'm not sure what I think of DC's recent push to surround Batman with a family.  It tends to get in the way of the whole grim avenger what avengers grimly vibe.  We've got four Robins, a Batwoman, a couple of Batgirls and...Clayface...as parts of the extended Bat-Family.  Its a little crowded

Enter Duke Williams, the only one of the New 52's street "Robins" to make it to the show.  Now with an actual set of powers and a spiffy yellow suit of armor, Williams patrols Gotham in the daylight as The Signal.

Okay, that's a fun idea.  A member of the Bat Family reminding Gotham that they care about the city as much in daylight as in the night?  And co-opting the Bat-Signal as his namesake?  That's right up on clever.

The first story arc is collected in a new trade paperback that goes on sale tomorrow.  It's a quality read for the Bat-Fan in your life.

SHARP OBJECTS - sure, this is kinda hedging my bets.  I talked about this last week, but I'd only watched a couple of episodes.  Since then I've watched six more.  That may be too many trips into Gillian Flynn's psyche for one week.  The long and short of it?  I spent the entire hour of last night's series finale saying "what the fuck am I watching?"  I guess that's what they were going for.  Suitably moody and gothic material delivered by a stellar cast will do that.  The mid-credit stinger is going to stick with me for a while.

WEIRD AL YANKOVIC - I was a devoted Dementite back in the day.  Every week my geek buddies and I would listen to Dr. Demento's radio show and rehash it all the next day at school.  Once of those rehashes was the first appearance of dude perfectly named Weird Al Yankovic.  Another One Rides the Bus and I Love Rocky Road were manna.  Of course, since those humble beginnings Al has become a big deal.  He's loved the world over.  UHF is an overlooked gem of absurdity.  Al is a national treasure and today he got a long overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  It's much deserved.

I can never thank Al enough for giving me the perfect kiss-off song to a cheating girlfrend back in my nighclub DJ days.  Angry and heartbroken, I searched for the perfect song to close the bar on a night when the ex brought her new beau into the club and completely threw me off my game all night.  Well, only Al could tell her how I really felt.  I will forever be grateful for that perfect moment.
