Monday Meandering - 8/20/18
Well, we made it back around to Monday kids.

My kids go back to school tomorrow, much to their dismay.

I'm glad to get them out of the house.

So, before I hit the hay for tonight, let's take a look back at the fun pop culture I was digging for the last 7 days or so.

ORION by WALTER SIMONSON VOLUME 1 - a little over a week ago I took the Wonder Twins to the local comic shop for a back-to-school run.  While they were pouring over Pops and discovering the joys of the back issues bins, I was strolling around just looking.  Just taking it all in.  Comic shops are one of my happy places.  I loaded up on Black Hammer books and then this one jumped off the shelf at me.  Walter Simonson, the man who made Thor great and one of the greatest artists of all time, taking on Kirby's Fourth World?  How in the Hel did I miss that?  I quickly grabbed the TPB and spent the last week or so just living in it.  Simonson is the perfect guy to tackle Kirby's modern mythology.  He updates where needed and expands where necessary.  Through it all, his artwork is the perfect complement to what went before, sound effects and all.  Not for someone new to Kirby's work, but a great read for fans.

BATMAN VOLUME 6:  BRIDE OR BURGLAR - I'm still not sure how I feel about Batman marrying Catwoman.  The continued addition of family and hangers on sure takes away from the lone avenger in the night mythos, but I guess everyone has to evolve.  Seeing the pair tackle such domestic issues as separation (through time travel) and finding the perfect dress (through burglary) makes me reconsider my position.  Its the ability to handle the mundane that builds the foundation of a marriage.  That these characters are doing it while fighting alien hordes and murderous children makes me think these crazy kids might just make it after all.

SHARP OBJECTS - the HBO adaptation of Gillian Flynn's novel has been accumulating on my DVR so the other night the wife and I decided it was time to give it a look.  I was a big fan of Gone Girl, book and movie, but had never read Sharp Objects.  The highest praise I can give the Amy Adams lead vehicle after two episodes is that it makes me uncomfortable.  Small towns full of long held family secrets has been done to death, but there is a genuine sense of darkness and decay riding beneath this one.  We need to get back to it.
