F1: Canada – Mercedes 1-2, Ricciardo third

Mercedes and Ferrari occupied the first two rows of the grid, Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), driver-standings leader Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari), Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), and Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari) qualifying in that order.

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) passed everyone but Hamilton at the start, with Bottas retaining third but Vettel dropping to fourth and Raikkonen to sixth. The safety car came out as both Felipe Massa (Williams) and Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) left the track violently in Turn 3 of Lap 1 following contact between Romain Grosjean (Haas) and the latter.

Green-flag racing resumed to start Lap 4. Vettel pitted during Lap 6 to change a damaged front wing. Verstappen’s car failed in Lap 10 (of 70), removing him from competition and bringing out a virtual safety car. Bottas ran second and Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) third at the Lap-15 restart.

Ricciardo pitted during Lap 19. Hamilton led Bottas by 6.2 sec in Lap 22. Bottas came in two laps later and Hamilton during Lap 32. Hamilton retained the lead followed by Bottas and Ricciardo.

These three finished in the same spots at race’s end. Esteban Ocon’s (Force India) sixth-place finish moved him to eighth in the driver standings. Canadian Lance Stroll (Williams) finished ninth to earn the first championship points of his career.
