Monday Meandering - 3/20/17
My wife went out of town to visit her parents this weekend.  That meant it was an all-boy, all-geek weekend around the old homestead.  We made it count.  Here's what we did.

IRON FIST - Yes, the whole thing.  For the first time I watched an entire MCU/Netflix show on opening weekend.  The critics savaged Iron Fist before the release.  I think that was because they couldn't really hang any kind of social statement on the show.  Is it slow in parts? Sure, as all of these shows have been.  Is it true to the character?  Sure, as much as any of these shows have been.  Is it good?  We enjoyed it.  They established Iron Fist's place in the MCU.  Developed some quality supporting characters (Colleen Wing has never been more interesting).  They laid the foundation for the bigger world of the Living Weapon.  There was even an archival shot of Orson Randall.  That made the slog worth it for me.  Give it a look.

KONG:  SKULL ISLAND - We took a break from Iron Fist to check out the latest updated of the King.  When last we saw Kong, he was being mishandled, badly, by Peter Jackson.  This update, the second installment of Legendary's monster universe, takes place in the closing days of Vietnam.  This gives the whole thing an underlying Apocalypse Now vibe.  It works.  The other great thing is they don't play coy with Kong.  The big ape appears early and often.  The cast is top notch and have chemistry.  The story isn't bogged down by the ape/blonde mythos.  All in all, its a welcome return for the King.  HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

LEGION - I honestly have no idea where this show is going, but its a trip.  From a supporting character named Syd Barrett to the psychedelic mindscapes, Legion continues to fascinate me.  The source character falls in my personal X-gap.   Here's a character that appeared in X-Titles I didn't read.  That works in my favor as I have no preconceived notions of how he should be portrayed.  I've watched the first five episodes and I believe the monster at the end of the story is the Shadow King.  Some have speculated that its Mojo.  If its Mojo this will instantly become a personal favorite, because that opens up a whole new weird space.  Give Legion a look, but don't attach your X-dom to it.
