Its been another long week kids. This one featured some new beginnings for yours truly. Its also been a weird week in the world of pop culture. Here's what struck me.
BILL PAXTON - the shocking news of Paxton's passing landed pretty hard around our house yesterday. Paxton was one of those solid actors whose work I always enjoyed, but I still had to take a moment to say "Paxton or Pullman?" when I heard the news. From
Weird Science to
Tombstone to
Apollo 13, Paxton had been a favorite for years. He's also one of only two men to be killed by a Predator, an Alien and a Terminator. That's the geek hat trick right there. RIP.
BLACK PANTHER - I've read the first two collected editions of the new
Black Panther series by award winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates. This may be as good as the ruler of Wakanda has ever been. The story is a tale of duty, honor and loyalty. It's highbrow stuff from the House of Ideas and you should really check it out.
THE OSCARS - Let's be honest. Last night's ceremony was pretty dull right up until the moment the winner of Best Picture got M. Night Shyamalaned. Kimmel was accused of plagarizing Tina Fey. The In Memoriam was treacle. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, it was a night of overcorrection. And, to top it off, the accountant was too busy tweeting to put the right envelope in Warren Beatty's hands. Top that Emmys!
