Alex Figge (GT, K-PAX Racing Volvo S60) and Mark Wilkins (GTS, Kinetic/Kia Racing Optima) were the Round 11 Pirelli World Challenge winners at the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio presented by StopTech Brakes. The wins were each driver’s second of the 2013 season.
Figge led wire-to-wire and finished 1.739 sec ahead of season points leader Johnny O’Connell (Cadillac Racing CTS-V.R). James Sofronas (GMG/Swisher Racing/Mobil 1 Audi R8 LMS) came in third.
Figge and teammate Randy Pobst were on the front row for the Round 12 standing start. But Sofronas jumped Pobst at the start to move into P2. The GTS pole-sitting Kia of Nic Jonsson retired during the Lap 1 with a mechanical problem.
Pobst retook second during Lap 2 (of 30), and the two Volvo’s began to pull away from the field. Lawson Aschenbach (Black Dog Racing Camaro) led Wilkins and Jack Baldwin (GTSport with Goldcrest Porsche Cayman S) in GTS at Lap 8.
Pobst was closing the gap on his teammate by 0.5 sec/lap in the middle laps. Peter Cunningham (RealTime Racing Acura TSX) took third in GTS during Lap 22 and passed Wilkins for P2 on Lap 27. Wilkins slipped to fourth as Baldwin made his way past in the final laps.
The GT running order of Figge, Pobst, and Sofronas remained intact at the end, with Aschenbach, Cunningham, and Baldwin making up the GTS podium.
