Simon Pagenaud (#22Team Penske, Chevy) came into Road America with an 80-point lead on Scott Dixon (#9 Chip Ganassi Racing, Chevy) and an 86-point edge on teammate Helio Castroneves (#3).
Will Power (#12 Penske) started on pole next to Dixon. Another Ganassi-Penske split occupied Row 2, Tony Kanaan (#10 Ganassi) starting third and Pagenaud fourth. Castroneves started P5, ahead of the best-qualifying Honda, Graham Rahal (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing).

A temporary street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, is home for the return of the Grand Prix of Europe. Championship points leader Nico Rosberg (Mercedes) started on pole, with Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) qualifying P2. Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) posted an identical time to Ricciardo, but the Red Bull did it first and Vettel lined up third, teammate Kimi Raikkonen started next door.
